Congratulations justice Susan Okalany!

Forum for Women Democracy (FOWODE) would like to congratulate Justice Susan Okalany upon her well-deserved award of Prosecutor of the Year by the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP). The High Court Judge was honored in Beijing, China by the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) on 7th September, 2017, for the remarkable job done when prosecuting the suspects connected to the 2010 Kampala bombings that left Uganda shaken and 76 people dead. Justice Okalany displayed tremendous courage and professionalism against a backdrop of the loss of a dear colleague and constant threats to her and her team.

FOWODE is proud of Justice Okalany, a former staff member who recounts how the organisation groomed and empowered her to be the person she is today. In her own words:

“As a young lawyer (a phrase I hated to be applied to my good self then), the vast national and international experience of a good number of the FOWODE leaders was simply downloaded into me at a point when I hardly had any real leadership experience. Although I had been a students’ leader in Makerere University, I didn’t really get any leadership mentorship from women leaders, the opportunity came with FOWODE. Rubbing shoulders with Winnie Byanyima, Salome Mukisa, Benina Mukiibi, Tezira Jamwa, Esther Opoti (RIP), Betty Aketch, Betty Adima, to name but a few, was to me putting the pedal to the metal.”

FOWODE continues to inspire and support young women in Uganda to embrace leadership by equipping them with diverse skills in the areas of gender budgeting, communication, lobbying and advocacy, among others, which they are using to impact their community and country. FOWODE stays committed to the noble cause of continually replenishing the leadership pool of strong and brave women leaders in Uganda.

I am one of those women that Fowode has trained, a paradigm shift in our society is beginning and Fowode is the reason why…it’s a time to address the human in a woman and finally put an end to patriarchy with its adverse effects. I believe transformation is becoming a reality and justice Susan congratulations
